Nutmeg is a seed (kernel) of the fruit from the myristica fragrans tree which is an evergreen tree indigenous to the Moluccas (or Spice Islands) of Indonesia. It is also found across the tropics including Guangdong, Taiwan and Yunnan in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Grenada in the Caribbean, Kerala in India, Sri Lanka and South America. Nutmeg is used in traditional Chinese medicine (CTM) as antidiarrheal (stop or slow diarrhea), secretory, an aid for digestion and kidney enhancer, it is also effective in treating rheumatalgia. It is named Rou Dou Kou (肉豆蔻) in Chinese.

The Ben Cao Medical Book (also known as Compendium of Materia Medica or Ben Cao Gang Mu; Chinese: 本草纲目) is the most famous and comprehensive medical book ever written in the history of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Compiled and written by Li Shi-zhen (1518~1593), a medical expert of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) over 27 years.
